The Moto G Play arrived in January 2024 as an entry-level phone that keeps things simple. The 6.5-inch screen runs at 720 x 1600 pixels, and a 5000 mAh battery sits behind it, which is the main reason this model tends to last well past a single day of light use. A single 50 MP rear camera handles photos, with an 8 MP camera on the front for calls and selfies. The practical features are all here: a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a microSD slot that takes cards up to 1 TB, and dual nano-SIM support so a work and a personal number can share one handset. Charging is over USB Type-C. With 4GB of RAM, it is built for calling, messaging, browsing and streaming.

The screen resolution of 720 x 1600 is lower than most phones this size, so text and video look softer than they would on a sharper panel. With 4GB of RAM, heavier apps and games will run slowly and background apps reload often. There is one rear camera, so no ultra-wide or zoom options, and no wireless charging. At 203 g it is on the heavy side. Major operating system updates are estimated to end in January 2027, with security patches until January 2029.
Is the Motorola Moto G Play (2024) a good buy?
As a basic phone that reliably makes calls, sends messages, runs everyday apps and lasts through the day, this does exactly what it sets out to do. The headphone jack, expandable storage and dual-SIM support are genuinely useful, and the battery is its strongest feature. Anyone who takes a lot of photos, games, or wants a crisp screen should spend more elsewhere in the range. For a straightforward, low-demand handset, it is fair value.
